El Yunque Flower Study #5 Original
Created: 2025
The Story
Born from a first stay in the lush mountains of El Yunque, these works explore a beautiful paradox of Puerto Rico. While walking through the streets of Old San Juan, I became captivated by the historic floor tiles - a permanent, rigid part of the island’s history spanning hundreds of years.
Later, while housesitting in the rainforest, a local gardener generously shared freshly cut tropical flowers for me to draw. These paintings capture that intersection: the enduring legacy of the "Old World" tiles beneath the vibrant, temporary beauty of the island's flora. Each piece features a unique botanical subject set against a backdrop inspired by real tile patterns found in the city.
